Urgent: Help STOP Internet Censorship
The RED page to the left could come up on your favorite website’s blocking you from all the site’s content thanks to the US Congress. The US Congress is considering America’s first system for censoring the Internet. Despite public outcry, the Internet Censorship bill could pass at anytime. If it does, the Internet and free speech will never be the same. While these bills appear to aim towards controling Piracy, if passed they will drastically impact the internet in ways that will FOREVER change us! If SOPA or Protect IP passes, the government can order internet providers to block any site for its users’ infringing posts, using the same DNS-blocking methods as China or Iran. It would become a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are an ordinary noncommercial user. Singing or posting a song on Facebook could be a felony. Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. To promote prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation by combating the theft of U.S. property, and for other purposes.

This bill would establish a system for taking down websites that the Justice Department determines to be dedicated to copyright infringment. The DoJ or the copyright owner would be able to commence a legal action against any site they deem to have “only limited purpose or use other than infringement,” and the DoJ would be allowed to demand that search engines, social networking sites and domain name services block access to the targeted site. It would also make unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted content a felony with a possible penalty up to five years in prison.
